Today, I saw tomatoes that actually looked edible in the grocery store. They were from… ISRAEL. That pretty much sums up my feelings about food right now: the good stuff is out there, it is just really far away.
I’ve been having a lot of bread-fails recently, and then I found out I had been using pastry flour (and it turns out that it makes a difference)
In frustration, I finally did something I hadn’t done in a while: knead bread by hand. It allowed me to target the problem I’d been having (lack of elasticity) and also make decent (finally) bread in the process. I slathered it in pesto and olive oil, braided it and sprinkled Parmesan on top. It’s all about making the most of a bad situation.

Lesson learned: when feeling uninspired, go back to the things you know. The innovation will come in new twists, ingredients and methods. Trying to do something completely new in the dead of winter takes more energy than my current vitamin D levels can muster. I haven’t made lasagna in a while, so that is next.
